Rummy apps assume you already speak the language. This glossary is the reference we wish every app shipped with — the terms below cover 95% of what you will see on tables, in rule pop-ups and in bonus terms. Bookmark it, and pair it with our full rules guide when you are ready for the details.
The Building Blocks
- Pure sequence — three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, no joker (e.g. 5♠-6♠-7♠). Every valid declaration needs at least one.
- Impure sequence — a sequence completed with a joker or wild card (e.g. 5♥-6♥-PJ).
- Set — three or four cards of the same rank in different suits (e.g. 9♠-9♥-9♦).
- Meld — any valid combination: a sequence or a set. Your thirteen cards must form four melds (at least two sequences, one pure).
- Declaration — laying out your completed hand for validation. An invalid declaration costs you 80 points in most apps.
Cards & Jokers
- Printed joker (PJ) — the joker card in the deck; substitutes for any card.
- Wild joker / cut joker — a rank chosen at random each game (e.g. all 8s) that also acts as a joker.
- Deadwood — cards not part of any meld when someone declares; their face value becomes your penalty points.
- Open deck / discard pile — the face-up pile you can pick from; watching it is a core skill.
- Closed deck / stock — the face-down draw pile.
Scoring & Money Terms
- Drop (first/middle) — quitting a deal early for a small fixed penalty (usually 20/40 points) instead of risking 80.
- Full count — the maximum penalty, typically 80 points.
- Points rummy — one-deal games where each point has a cash value.
- Pool rummy — elimination format (101/201); last player under the threshold wins. See our formats guide.
- Deals rummy — a fixed number of deals; most chips at the end wins.
- Rake / entry fee — the platform's cut of a cash table or tournament.
- KYC — identity verification (PAN + bank/UPI) required before withdrawals. Covered in our KYC guide.
- Bonus release — sign-up bonuses unlock in chunks as you play; the release rate is the number that matters. See bonuses explained.
Table Talk
- Blind discard — discarding without checking what opponents picked up — a beginner leak.
- Fishing — discarding a card hoping to tempt a specific pick that reveals an opponent's hand.
- Middle cards — 4s through 9s, the most flexible cards for sequences; hold them longer.
- Table stakes — the point value or entry fee of the table you join.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the questions players ask most.
Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit made without any joker — for example 4♠-5♠-6♠. A valid rummy declaration is impossible without at least one pure sequence, so building it first is the golden rule.
Deadwood is any card not part of a sequence or set when a player declares. The face values of your deadwood cards become your penalty points, which is why high cards you cannot meld should be discarded early.
A drop is quitting a deal early for a small fixed penalty (20 points first drop, 40 middle). A declaration is showing a completed hand for validation — a correct one wins the deal, a wrong one costs the maximum 80 points.
Yes — the Supreme Court of India classifies rummy as a game of skill, which is legal in most states. A few states restrict real-money play; our legality guide keeps the current state list updated.
Absolutely. Every app in our best rummy apps ranking includes free practice tables with virtual chips. We strongly recommend at least a dozen practice games before your first cash table.
Indian courts consistently rule rummy a game of skill: card distribution involves chance, but outcomes over many games are driven by memory, probability calculation, discarding strategy and reading opponents. That skill element is exactly why it is legal in most Indian states.
